It was an exciting time around Trilogy Guitars this past weekend as we presented a SOLD OUT Andrew York concert and also began our collaboration with the fantastic artist Timothy Williams, who hung a variety of pieces around the shop!
The first classical guitar piece that I proactively pestered my teacher to allow me to learn was Andrew York's "Sunday Morning Overcast" and the majority of pieces in my quiver of music for auditioning guitars for clients are also from the extensive York catalog. So having the guitarist/composer, who is partly responsible for my love of the classical guitar, play the shop has always been a special treat for me personally! But the Trilogy concert go-ers were also in an especially high-spirited mood and the energy in the Triangle was ripe for a great show. Andy played two outstanding halves of all original compositions. He pulled pieces from his latest and excellent self-publishing efforts ("Kinderlight Suite," "Seven in Essence" and "Letting Go"), old favorites like "Andecy", "Marley's Ghost," and "Sunburst"; and he also played the new, 3-movement piece, he wrote for a couple who tour as a guitarist/weaver duo with the art of weaving serving as the inspiration for the piece. Andy's energy and evocative playing carried everyone effortlessly through the concert and it was only at intermission and post-concert that I realized he had given us 50-55 minute sets and one killer concert!
The atmosphere and ambience of the night were also lifted by the presence of artwork by Culver City artist and the Black Cat Gallery owner, Timothy Williams. Taking discarded and found objects that range from windows, portholes, cellos, surfboard, doors, bones, clocks, and (our favorite) guitars, Timothy sets to work creating darker, more weathered, more worn, more forgotten auras for the pieces and then uses them as the vessels and frames for his mixed media works and photography. We are thrilled to be working with Timothy and can't thank him enough for getting all the pieces up just a few hours before Andy took the stage.
It's been very exciting times at Trilogy and looking ahead at what John and I have planned there will certainly be some more!
