Benz Tschannen was born in Switzerland in 1949. Tschannen was inspired by a recording of the great Andrés Segovia to play the guitar and in 1973 he graduated with a Masters Degree in music from the Bern Conservatory. He taught the guitar until 1976. In that same year Tschannen moved to the United States where he worked at a custom cabinet making workshop. He built his first instrument in 1981 but began building full time in 2005 at the age of 56.
Tschannen began in the traditional style that builders such as Jose Ramírez and Jose Romanillos employed when they built their now legendary instruments. He eventually began to add more modern elements such as the inclusion of a double top, a sound port, and the "Millenium," style neck.
