A discussion between Richard Hoover, of Santa Cruz Guitar Company, and John of Trilogy about the gap between steel string and classical guitars both feel-wise and sound-wise, led Richard to design and build what he felt would be a wonderful bridge between the two. The result was the small bodied Style 1. We received our first in 2004 and were immediately taken with the comfortable size that seemed not to sacrifice any volume or power. The small design brought focus to the bass, which gave the instrument a balance more similar to a classical guitar and make it ideal for recording. The Style 1's made for us here at Trilogy are built as cedar tops with the availability of walnut or Brazilian rosewood for the back and sides and feature a pyramid bridge and engraved Waverly tuning machines with ivoroid knobs.
Walnut was the original wood choice for the Style 1 that both John and Richard thought would set the model apart. The walnut in this 2005 model (#211) seemed to call for a deeper box, which resulted in a richer, darker sounding Style 1 (especially when compared to its Brazilian brother). The walnut also seems to bring out the roundness of the cedar top, giving the guitar a mellow, blended tone. An eye popping red is utilized in the purfling and rosette. The top was tuned personally by Richard Hoover.
